"What Disciples Must See"
How well do you know Jesus? Its been said that people will not trust their lives to someone whom they do not know as trustworthy. So again I ask, how well do you know Him? Let me rephrase that question. Are you able to trust Jesus with your life, including all its details? In twenty years of Pastoral ministry, I have met many people who have a wrong concept of Jesus. Perhaps you have met people with misconceptions about Jesus. Its nothing new! His early disciples had a wrong concept about Him. They perceived Him as a conquering King. Of course we know that Jesus came as a suffering servant (Isaiah 53). As Jesus spent time with His disciples and they with Him, their misconceptions began to disappear. Slowly, they saw Jesus in a different light. I find it fascinating to realize that the entire first year of Jesus ministry was spent teaching His followers who He was! Jesus was patient to teach His followers a proper concept of Himself. He knew that this was the very basis for the kind of relationship every true disciple must have. As Dann Spader suggests, "Only as people understood who He was and why He came, would they begin to have the right motivation for following Him." Sadly, many people follow Jesus today for the wrong reasons. Following Jesus has nothing to do with our own selfish interests and pursuits. Its not about personal gain and glory. Following Jesus is about trusting Him to take complete control of our lives and make them into vessels that are well pleasing to Him. When we, as those who claim to follow Him, are merely looking for our own satisfaction and fulfillment, our misconceptions are evident. Disciples must see Jesus as the Lord of all! As Dann Spader powerfully suggests, "It is very difficult to yield your life to someone you do not know properly." My challenge to you today is to get to know Jesus. Get into His Word. Dig deep. Let Him reveal Himself to you in all His fullness and glory. When you really know Him, your life will reflect it. When people see you, they will see Jesus in you! Jesus will guide you. He will direct you. He will solve those difficulties. He will show Himself faithful and trustworthy. What are you waiting for? Confess Jesus as Lord, and see what disciples must see!
